Order Process

Booksamillion.com uses a "shopping cart" system that essentially operates the same way you would use a shopping cart in a retail store: you can put items in and take items out at any time. An "Add To Cart" button appears next to each item throughout the online store. Add To Cart Simply click the button to add an item to your cart.

Each time you add an item you will see a confirmation of the item you just added to your cart, and you will be free to continue shopping. You can always view the complete contents of your cart by clicking the "View Cart" button that appears in the navigation menu near the top of every page. If you wish to order multiple copies of the same item, first click "View Cart." Then simply change the number in the quantity field and press the "Update Quantities" button.

When you have finished selecting the items you wish to purchase, press the "Check Out" button to advance to the payment and shipping area. At the first step of the checkout process, you will be prompted to "Set Up A New Account" or "Sign In" if you're already a registered customer. When you set up a new Booksamillion.com account, you'll enter your email address and a password. Your password needs to be at least four characters long, and can be any combination of letters and/or numbers.

Please note: Once you enter an email address and establish a password, our system will remember that relationship even if you don't actually place an order! If this is your first order with us, but you've previously entered an email address and password, you may want to try signing in as a "registered customer."

After entering your email address and password, click Continue New Account Setup and follow the steps to enter your shipping information and payment information. Even if you will be paying by gift certificate, our account set-up process requires a valid credit card to be entered.

At the Review step of the checkout process, you will be asked to verify that your order information is correct before submitting the order. At this step, you will also have the opportunity to choose the shipping method, select gift options, enter a coupon code, enter Millionaire's Club member information or validate / apply a gift certificate. Once you are sure the order is correct, click the "submit" button. At this point, Booksamillion.com will attempt to pre-authorize the charge. This process is designed to better assist you with your order and ensure that your order will not be later delayed by a billing error. You will not actually be charged at this step; Booksamillion.com only charges orders once the order actually ships. If this pre-authorization fails when you attempt to submit your order, you will get a billing error message that will prompt you to recheck your billing information or enter an alternate credit card. You will not be able to submit your order until there is a successful pre-authorization. Once your order has been submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. This confirmation will also contain your Order ID number. You'll want to keep this information in your records, as it will help our Customer Support staff better assist you should you need to contact us.

Add or Remove Items

Click an "Add To Cart" button to add an item to your order. If you are viewing the list of items in your shopping cart, click the "Continue Shopping" button to find more merchandise.

There are two ways to remove items from your shopping cart. Begin by clicking the "View Cart" button in the navigation menu. Check the selection box next to the items you want to remove, then click the "Remove Selected" button. Another way to remove items is to change the quantity to zero, and then click the "Update Quantities" button.

Saving My Shopping Cart

You can save the items in your shopping cart to a wish list if you do not want to purchase them right away. When viewing your shopping cart, check the selection box next to the items you want to save, then click the "Move To Wish List" button. You'll need to sign in to save items to your wish list. When you return to Booksamillion.com, simply sign in and click the "Edit Wish List" button to view the contents of your Wish List.

Item Availability

The stock status of each item is clearly displayed on Booksamillion.com. Shipping timeframes range from 24 hours for in-stock items to 3-5 weeks for special order items. Advance Order items are shipped when they are released by the publisher.

When you check out, you specify how you want us to handle your order in the event your items have different availability timeframes. Advance Order items will not delay the rest of your order and will not increase your shipping cost. So, choose your shipping preference without regard to any Advance Order items that you are purchasing:

  • Ship when order is complete (minimizes shipping cost) - We will hold your order and ship it only when all items are in stock. This option minimizes your shipping cost.
  • Ship as items become available (at extra shipping cost) - We will ship your items as they become available. Whenever possible, we will ship items with similar availability together. While this will increase your shipping charges, it is the preferred method because it prevents a special order item from delaying the rest of your order.

We may discover that an item on your order is no longer available or will be out of stock for an extended time. At that point, we will ship the balance of your order and ask you to reorder the out of stock item in the future. This will not increase your shipping charges unless you have chosen the "as available" shipment option.

Sales Tax

Sales tax is collected on orders shipped to Alabama (AL), Arkansas (AR), Florida (FL), Georgia (GA), Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Iowa (IA), Kansas (KS), Kentucky (KY), Louisiana (LA), Maryland (MD), Michigan (MI), Minnesota (MN), Missouri (MO), Mississippi (MS), Nebraska (NE), Nevada (NV), New Jersey (NJ), New York (NY), North Carolina (NC), North Dakota (ND), Ohio (OH), Oklahoma (OK), Rhode Island (RI), South Carolina (SC), South Dakota (SD), Texas (TX), Tennessee (TN), Utah (UT), Vermont (VT), Virginia (VA), Washington (WA), Washington D.C. (DC), West Virginia (WV), Wisconsin (WI) and Wyoming (WY).

Sales tax will be applied to the entire order, possibly including shipping and handling and/or gift wrap fees where applicable. Tax calculations are based on the destination address and may include city, county and state charges.

When placing an order we will display an estimated sales tax amount. The exact sales tax will not be calculated and charged until your order is processed to ship. Because tax laws may change between the time your order is placed and when your order is charged and shipped it is possible the tax amount will increase or decrease.

Tax-Exempt Orders
Schools, libraries, churches, government and non-profit agencies and other tax exempt organizations can easily place a tax exempt order by contacting the Business Department at 800-201-3550 option 3 Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM C.S.T. You will be required to fax your tax exempt certificate to 205-909-3396 or email a copy to business@booksamillion.com.

As of October 9, 2006 all tax exempt records will be updated and you may be asked to resubmit your certificate for verification purposes. Once verification has been made your account will be set to allow tax exempt purchases.

Tax-Exempt Government Purchases
Some government purchases may not be qualified for tax exempt status in some cities, counties or states. Applicable taxes are also charged base on the level of government agency, which includes Federal, State and Local.

Payment Options

Booksamillion.com gladly accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover for your convenience.

You also have the option to use PayPal as your payment method. On the final step of the checkout process, simply select PayPal as your payment method. After you click "Submit This Order" you will be redirected to the PayPal site to complete the transaction.

Credit Card Security

You can transmit your credit card information over the Internet with absolute confidence. Booksamillion.com processes orders with a SSL Secure Commerce Server which utilizes military grade encryption to protect your credit card information, and all credit card information is encoded with strong encryption before storage. To further respect your privacy, Booksamillion.com does not release your credit card information or mailing address to any outside organizations.

Return Policy

Booksamillion.com guarantees your satisfaction and offers you returns within 30 days of order receipt. To ensure that your returned merchandise is credited properly you must first contact Customer Service to obtain a return authorization number and package label. Packages without proper return authorization will not be accepted.

Items returned will be refunded to the credit card used; if you paid by check, you will be issued a merchandise credit. We do not issue refund checks. Please note that shipping and handling charges are non-refundable.

To return an item for any reason within 30 days of order receipt:

  • Send an email message to our Customer Service department at support@booksamillion.com. Put "Return authorization needed" on the subject line to help us process your request quickly. In the body of the email message specify your Order ID number, the reason for return, and list the item(s) you are returning. We will provide a return authorization number within 24 hours and will email a return label to you.
  • Pack the item(s) that you are returning to us. Enclose a copy of your packing slip and wrap the package securely. Affix the label that we emailed to you and ship the package via U.S. Mail or UPS. Be sure to apply adequate postage.

Within 2 to 3 business days after we receive your package, our Returns Department will issue your credit. We will notify you via e-mail of the amount of your refund.

Please note: Booksamillion.com purchases cannot be returned to Books-A-Million, Inc. retail stores. All returns and billing questions must be resolved within 30 days of order receipt.

Check Your Order Status

You can check your order status in the My Account section. Click "My Account" from the top of any page, then enter your email address and password. You'll then see the order history and status of your recent orders.
