No champion has astonished the world quite like Lance Armstrong. A cancer survivor who went on to win the Tour de France an unprecedented seven times, he is an inspiration to millions. Yet few know the complete story of this brash, smart, and fiercely competitive Texan who battled to the top of his sport, overcame the most rampant case of testicular cancer doctors had seen, and then conquered cycling's Holy Grail time after time. In "Lance: The Making of the World's Greatest Champion," John Wilcockson draws on dozens of interviews with those who know him best to trace Armstrong's remarkable, yet controversial journey in vivid detail.

Family members--including his adoptive father speaking publicly for the first time--recall Lance's humble origins in the backstreets of Dallas, the father he barely knew, his single mom's struggle for survival, and her second marriage that brought a move to the suburbs and new opportunities. His childhood friends and early mentors remember how he moved on from Little League baseball and football to excel at swimming, running, and triathlon, while living the life of a teenager who loved fast cars and pretty girls. They also describe the circumstances that eventually led to his taking up cycling.

As Lance's fierce ambition drove him from the dusty plains of Texas to the snowy peaks of Europe, he was both admired and derided. He intimidated his rivals, earned the respect of his teammates, and astounded everyone with his extraordinary deeds. But his achievements have consistently been dogged by allegations of doping and secrecy, and questions of how triumph on such a grand scale could even be possible.

So how did Lance become the supreme champion of his sport? He didn't do it alone. His compelling story is intertwined with the stories of those who helped shape his life and career, including his mother Linda, ex-wife Kristin, and one-time fiancee Sheryl Crow, along with those of his mentors, coaches, and friends. Their voices, along with those who helped him expand his cancer foundation into a worldwide movement, are integral to his unique story. "Lance" also reveals details, many for the first time, of how Armstrong's legendary training, near-fatal bout with cancer, repeated doping allegations, and hostile European media all pushed him to reach the pinnacle of his sport and rightly claim the title of the world's greatest champion.

Dyer reveals how to change the self-defeating thinking patterns that have prevented you from living at the highest levels of success, happiness, and health. Even though you may know "what "to think, actually" changing "those thinking habits that have been with you since childhood might be somewhat challenging. "If I changed, it would create family dramas . . . I'm too old or too young . . . I'm far too busy and tired . . . I can't afford the things I truly want . . . It would be very difficult for me to do things differently . . . "and" I've always been this way . . . "may all seem to be true, but they're in fact just excuses. So the business of modifying habituated thinking patterns really comes down to tossing out the same tired old excuses and examining your beliefs in a new and truthful light. In this groundbreaking work, Wayne presents a compendium of conscious and subconscious crutches employed by virtually everyone, along with ways to cast them aside once and for all. You'll learn to apply specific questions to any excuse, and then proceed through the steps of a new" "paradigm. The old, habituated ways of thinking will melt away as you experience the absurdity of hanging on to them. You'll ultimately realize that there are no excuses worth defending, ever, even if they've always been part of your life--and the joy of releasing them will resonate throughout your very being. When you eliminate the need to explain your shortcomings or failures, you'll awaken to the life of your dreams. "Excuses . . . Begone "

<![CDATA['Common Sense']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9781439168578"; By: Beck, Glenn"If you believe it's time to put principles above parties, character above campaign promises, and "Common Sense" above all -- then I ask you to read this book...."

In any era, great Americans inspire us to reach our full potential. They know with conviction what they believe within themselves. They understand that all actions have consequences. And they find commonsense solutions to the nation's problems.

One such American, Thomas Paine, was an ordinary man who changed the course of history by penning "Common Sense," the concise 1776 masterpiece in which, through extraordinarily straightforward and indisputable arguments, he encouraged his fellow citizens to take control of America's future -- and, ultimately, her freedom.

Nearly two and a half centuries later, those very freedoms once again hang in the balance. And now, Glenn Beck revisits Paine's powerful treatise with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government's easy solutions, two-part monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

<![CDATA['Catastrophe']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780061771040"; By: Morris, Dick

It's time to take back our country.

Now. It's that simple. It's that urgent.

So begins Dick Morris and Eileen McGann's latest and most important book. They say that we must act before President Barack Obama fully implements his radical political agenda. Because after Obama has won his war on prosperity and canceled the war on terror, it will be too late to regain our liberty or our security.

At a time when we needed a pragmatic centrist to lead us out of recession, we got a doctrinaire socialist who wants to use the crisis to put the government in charge of the economy and enact European socialism here in the United States.

Cars, banks--what's next? He will keep at it until Washington governs every major business in America and sets all our salaries.

It's a catastrophe.

Dick Morris and Eileen McGann saw the meltdown coming. In their book "Outrage," they called out the house of cards that was Fannie Mae. In "Fleeced," they went after the credit card companies, the subprime mortgage lenders, and the hedge fund billionaires who conspired to wreck the economy--and Barack Obama, whose policies, they predicted last summer, would "trigger a stock market crash."

Now, in "Catastrophe," Morris and McGann take a hard look at America in free fall--and at how Obama is transforming a vulnerable America into a socialist state.

They tell the truth about Obama and his radical policies: He will destroy our health care system so that no one gets adequate care. He designed his bank rescue plan to pave the way for nation-alization of the banks and socialization of the economy. He firmly believes in government control of our major industries--he's already commandeered the banks and the automobile industry. He plans to reshape the political landscape to keep the left in power for decades by cooking the census, enfranchising illegal immigrants, muzzling talk radio, and coercing workers into unions. He is attacking those who fight terrorism while letting the terrorists go free. He gives aid to Hamas while Shariah Law threatens to take over America. He has repealed the Declaration of Independence and put us under a worldwide, European-dominated financial regulatory system.

But Obama is not working alone. Morris and McGann spell out how Congress is complicit: How Senator Chris Dodd and Congressman Charlie Rangel use special interests and special friends for their own enrichment and glorification. How Ted Kennedy Jr. is exploiting his father's health care power.

"This is no time for apathy or alienation or hopelessness," Morris and McGann remind us. "It's a time for action." And that action must begin now--before it's too late.

<![CDATA['Crazy for the Storm']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780061766725"; By: Ollestad, Norman

"Dad Said

Olestad, we can do i t all. . . ."

Why do you make me do this?

"Because it's beautiful when it all comes together. "

I don't think it's ever beautiful.

"One day."

Never.

"We'll see, my father said. Vamanos."

From the age of three, Norman Ollestad was thrust into the world of surfing and competitive downhill skiing by the intense, charismatic father he both idolized and resented. While his friends were riding bikes, playing ball, and going to birthday parties, young Norman was whisked away in pursuit of wild and demanding adventures. Yet it were these exhilarating tests of skill that prepared "Boy Wonder," as his father called him, to become a fearless champion--and ultimately saved his life.

Flying to a ski championship ceremony in February 1979, the chartered Cessna carrying Norman, his father, his father's girlfriend, and the pilot crashed into the San Gabriel Mountains and was suspended at 8,200 feet, engulfed in a blizzard. "Dad and I were a team, and he was Superman," Ollestad writes. But now Norman's father was dead, and the devastated eleven-year-old had to descend the treacherous, icy mountain alone.

Set amid the spontaneous, uninhibited surf culture of Malibu and Mexico in the late 1970s, this riveting memoir, written in crisp Hemingwayesque prose, recalls Ollestad's childhood and the magnetic man whose determination and love infuriated and inspired him--and also taught him to overcome the indomitable. As it illuminates the complicated bond between an extraordinary father and his son, Ollestad's powerful and unforgettable true story offers remarkable insight for us all.

"A heart-stopping adventure that ends in tragedy and in triumph, a love story that fearlessly explores the bond between a father and son and what it means to a lead a life without limits."
--Susan Cheever

"A book that may well be read for generations. It's a book that fathers should give to their sons, but sons should give it to their fathers, too...mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: read it and weep for all the boys and men you have ever loved."
--Russell Banks

<![CDATA['Horse Soldiers']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9781416580515"; By: Stanton, DougFrom the "New York Times"-bestselling author of "In Harm's Way" comes a true-life story of American soldiers overcoming great odds to achieve a stunning military victory.

"Horse Soldiers" is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators, and overjoyed Afghans thronged the streets. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn. During a surrender of six hundred Taliban troops, the Horse Soldiers were ambushed. Dangerously outnumbered, they fought for their lives in the city's immense fortress, Qala-i-Janghi, or the House of War. At risk were the military gains of the entire campaign: if the soldiers perished or were captured, the effort to defeat the Taliban might be doomed.

As the Americans struggled to hold the fortress, they faced some of the most intense urban warfare of our time. But until now the full story of the Horse Soldiers has never been told. Doug Stanton received unprecedented cooperation from the U.S. Army's Special Forces soldiers and Special Operations helicopter pilots, as well as access to voluminous after-battle reports. In addition, he interviewed more than one hundred participants and walked every inch of the climactic battleground.

This exciting story is filled with unforgettable characters: brave Special Forces soldiers, tough CIA operatives, cunning Afghan warlords, anxious stateside soldiers' wives who do not know where their husbands have gone, and humble Afghan boys spying on the Taliban.

Deeply researched and beautifully written, Stanton's account of America's quest to liberate an oppressed people touches the mythic. The Horse Soldiers combined ancient strategies of cavalry warfare with twenty-first-century aerial bombardment technology to perform a seemingly impossible feat. Moreover, their careful effort to win the hearts of local townspeople and avoid civilian casualties proved a valuable lesson for America's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan.

"Horse Soldiers" is a big-hearted and thrilling read, with an epic story that reaches not just across the cold mountains of Afghanistan but into the homes of small-town America, and confirms Doug Stanton as one of our country's preeminent storytellers.

"The Last Best Hope" draws on the forgotten genius of conservatism to offer a road map for the movement and the country. Delivering a searing indictment of the political leaders who have led us astray, Scarborough inspires conservatives to reclaim their heritage by drawing upon the strength of the movement's rich history.
With independent thinking and straight talk, Scarborough explains:
- How Washington and Wall Street conspired to create the housing bubble that caused America's financial meltdown
- How the "candidate of change" has not only maintained but accelerated the reckless spending policies that led us to this historic economic collapse
- How Washington's bailout culture will cripple America's future if left unchecked
- How Barack Obama's stimulus plan devolved into a socialist spending spree that would make FDR and LBJ shudder
- And how conservatives need to take a closer look at Ronald Reagan's political career before claiming his great legacy
A fearlessly argued conservative manifesto that brings American conservatism into the twenty-first century, "The Last Best Hope" is a must-read for all who care about the direction America is heading.

Master of suspense and #1 "New York Times" bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his most riveting international thriller yet.

A new administration and a new approach to dealing with America's enemies have left covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath without a job. But when American doctor Julia Gallo is kidnapped in Afghanistan, the terms of her ransom leave the president with only one course of action.

In a dangerous assignment that the United States government will deny any knowledge of, Scot Harvath must secretly infiltrate Kabul's notorious Policharki Prison and free the man the kidnappers demand as ransom - al-Qaeda mastermind, Mustafa Khan.

But when Harvath arrives, he quickly learns that there is more to the kidnapping than anyone dares to admit. And as the subterfuge is laid bare, Harvath must examine his own career of hunting down and killing terrorists, and ask himself if he has what it takes to help one of the world's worst go free.

<![CDATA['The Doomsday Key']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780061231407"; By: Rollins, James

James Rollins, the "New York Times" bestselling master of nail-biting suspense and historical mystery, combines cutting-edge biotechnology with a centuries-old secret in an apocalyptic story that reveals where humankind is truly headed

"The Doomsday Key"

At Princeton University, a famed geneticist dies inside a biohazard lab. In Rome, a Vatican archaeologist is found dead in St. Peter's Basilica. In Africa, a U.S. senator's son is slain outside a Red Cross camp. The three murders on three continents bear a horrifying connection: all the victims are marked by a Druidic pagan cross burned into their flesh.

The bizarre murders thrust Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force into a race against time to solve a riddle going back centuries, to a ghastly crime against humanity hidden within a cryptic medieval codex. The first clue is discovered inside a mummified corpse buried in an English peat bog--a gruesome secret that threatens America and the world.

Aided by two women from his past--one his exlover, the other his new partner--Gray must piece together the horrifying truth. But the revelations come at a high cost, and to save the future, Gray will have to sacrifice one of the women at his side. That alone might not be enough, as the true path to salvation is revealed in a dark prophecy of doom.

Sigma Force confronts humankind's greatest threat in an adventure that races from the Roman Coliseum to the icy peaks of Norway, from the ruins of medieval abbeys to the lost tombs of Celtic kings. The ultimate nightmare is locked within a talisman buried by a dead saint--an ancient artifact known as the Doomsday Key.

<![CDATA['Return to Sullivans Island']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780061438455"; By: Frank, Dorothea Benton

Dorothea Benton Frank returns to the enchanted landscape of South Carolina's Lowcountry made famous in her beloved "New York Times" bestseller "Sullivans Island" to tell the story of the next generation of Hamiltons and Hayes.

"Return to Sullivans Island"

Whether you were away from the Lowcountry for a week or for years, it was impossible to remember how gorgeous it was. It never changed and everyone depended on that.

Newly graduated from college and an aspiring writer, Beth Hayes craves independence and has a world to conquer. But her notions of travel, graduate study, and writing the great American novel will have to be postponed. With her mother, Susan, leaving to fulfill her own dreams in Paris and her Aunt Maggie, Uncle Grant, and stepfather, Simon, moving to California, Beth is elected by her elders to house-sit the Island Gamble. Surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic, the white clapboards, silver tin roof, and confessional porch have seen and heard the stories of generations of Hamiltons. But will the ghosts of the Island Gamble be watching over Beth?

Buoyed by sentimental memories of growing up on this tiny sandbar that seems to be untouched by time, Beth vows to give herself over to the Lowcountry force and discover the wisdom it holds. She will rest, rejuvenate, and then reenter the outside world. Just as she vows she will never give into the delusional world of white picket fences, minivans, and eternal love, she meets Max Mitchell. And all her convictions and plans begin to unravel with lightning speed.

There is so much about life and her family's past that she does not know. Her ignorance and naivetE nearly cost her both her inheritance and her family's respect. But Beth finds unexpected friends to help her through the disaster she faces: her wise and charming Aunt Sophie; Cecily Singleton, the granddaughter of Livvie Singleton; and Woody Morrison, the solid young investment banker.

This wonderful ensemble of characters could be your own family, but watch what unfolds as they succumb to the island's spell. <![CDATA['The Fixer Upper']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780060837389"; By: Andrews, Mary KayThe delightful "New York Times"-bestselling author returns with a hilarious stand-alone novel that captures the sassy, poignant flavor of small-town Southern life.

  4. 4. CRAZY FOR YOU by Jennifer Crusie
  5. 5. GET SHORTY by Elmore Leonard

Top 5 Renovating Tips:

  1. 1. An old house needs old doors, hardware and fixtures. Nothing says new and cheap faster than a flimsy hollow-core door and bright gold repro brass hardware. Look for solid wood doors and wood frame windows at salvage yards and antique markets. And dont forget to check the building materials category on Craigslist. I got all the doors for my beach house off Craigslistfor $5 apiece. Vintage hardware can frequently be found at flea markets, or check online sources like eBay.
  2. 2. Vintage light fixtures give a great lookbut be sure you factor in the cost of re-wiring them, and finding good-looking shades. Nothing gives a lamp that granny look faster than a dingy yellow shade.
  3. 3. Before you invest in antique cast-iron claw-foot tubs or sinks, make sure they have proper fittings. Measure drains and faucet spreads and make sure you can find new ones that will fit and function properly. Antique toilets are generally a bad ideamost local codes require low-flow toilets for water conservation.
  4. 4. Before re-wiring a house, put together a furniture floor plan. You dont want a heat register under the living room sofa, but you will want outlets on either side of the bed for reading lamps, and for any area that might be used as an office youll want plenty of grounded plugs. And how about that flat-screen television your husband wants? Plan now for cable locations.
  5. 5. Be flexible. A great fireplace surround could become a headboard, as could an old paneled doorturned sideways. And that leaded glass window that had to be removed in the remodel? Why not fit it with mirrors and a hinge and make it into a bathroom medicine cabinet?

In the Micronesian Islands, a top secret, U.S. government sponsored undersea lab conducting vital biomedical research on a rare jellyfish known as the Blue Medusa suddenly . . . disappears. At the same time, off Bermuda, a bathysphere is attacked by an underwater vehicle and left helpless a half mile below the surface, its passengers, including Zavala, left to die. Only Kurt Austin's heroic measures save them from a watery grave, but, suspecting a connection, Austin puts the NUMAA(R) team on the case. He has no idea what he's just gotten them all into. A hideous series of medical experiments . . . an extraordinarily ambitious Chinese criminal organization . . . a secret new virus that threatens to set off a worldwide pandemic. Austin and Zavala have been in tight spots before, but this time it's not just their own skins they're trying to save, it's the lives of millions.
Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, "Medusa" is the most thrilling novel yet from the grand master of adventure.

The visionary creator of the Academy Award-winning "Pan's Labyrinth" and a Hammett Award-winning author bring their imaginations to this bold, epic novel about a horrifying battle between man and vampire that threatens all humanity. It is the first installment in a thrilling trilogy and an extraordinary international publishing event.

    "The Strain"

They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country.

    In two months--the world.

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city--a city that includes his wife and son--before it is too late.

Bestselling novelist Cullen "Cubby" Greenwich is a lucky man and he knows it. He makes a handsome living doing what he enjoys. His wife, Penny, a children's book author and illustrator, is the love of his life. Together they have a brilliant six-year-old, Milo, affectionately dubbed "Spooky," and a non-collie named Lassie, who's all but part of the family.
So Cubby knows he shouldn't let one bad review of his otherwise triumphant new book get to him--even if it does appear in the nation's premier newspaper and is penned by the much-feared, seldom-seen critic, Shearman Waxx. Cubby knows the best thing to do is ignore the gratuitously vicious, insulting, and inaccurate comments. Penny knows it, even little Milo knows it. If Lassie could talk, she'd tell Cubby to ignore them, too.
Ignore Shearman Waxx and his poison pen is just what Cubby intends to do. Until he happens to learn where the great man is taking his lunch. Cubby just wants to get a look at the mysterious recluse whose mere opinion can make or break a career--or a life.
But Shearman Waxx isn't what Cubby expects; and neither is the escalating terror that follows what seemed to be an innocent encounter. For Waxx gives criticism; he doesn't take it. He has ways of dealing with those who cross him that Cubby is only beginning to fathom. Soon Cubby finds himself in a desperate struggle with a relentless sociopath, facing an inexorable assault on far more than his life.
Fearless, funny, utterly compelling, Relentless is Dean Koontz at his riveting best, an unforgettable tale of the fragile bonds that hold together all that we most cherish--and of those who would tear those bonds asunder.

    <![CDATA['The Awakening']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780061662768"; By: Armstrong, Kelley

If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl--someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment--not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control; I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

Now I'm running for my life with three of my supernatural friends--a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch--and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts, demons, and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the Darkest Powers young adult urban fantasy trilogy, the Women of the Otherworld paranormal suspense series, and the Nadia Stafford crime series. She lives in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with her husband, kids, and far too many pets. Even with 13 books published, and more coming, I still consider writing my favorite hobby. Storytelling is my passion, and it rises from a love of reading. I've been an avid reader from a very young age and quickly wanted to start telling my own stories. My otherequalpassion is my family. Yeah, it's rather cliche, but my family is very important to me, and if I'm not working, I'm usually hanging out with them. Hobbies? Cooking (especially baking), hiking, camping, movies, and RPGs (hey, I'm a former computer programmerof course, I play RPGsit's, like, a career requirement).

The Awakening is the second book in Armstrongs Darkest Powers series for young adults. And, I feel that I should give anyone who hasnt read the first book, The Summoning, a warning there are probably spoilers contained in this post. Id suggest you forgo reading it to be on the safe side. Fifteen-year-old Chloe Saunders was a normal teenage girl until an incident at her high school led to her being locked up at Lyle House for treatment. Once there, Chloe quickly learned nothing was as it seemed to be. She learned she wasnt crazy but had a powerful gift instead. Chloe is a necromancer and the other teenagers locked up in Lyle House with her have their own gifts. Four of those kids escape Lyle House but a moment of weakness leads Chloe and another girl, Rae, to turn to Chloes aunt for help and they find themselves in even more trouble. They are in the hands of the Edison Group, a secret organization that wants to use and control those with abilities like Chloe and her friends. Chloe and another girl manage once again to escape and reunited with Derek and Simon as they set out on a journey designed to take them to safety... or what they hope is safety. I enjoyed The Summoning a great deal and was looking forward to this one. I wasnt disappointed in the least. The kids change and grow during this story as they begin to understand what theyre facing. They also learn to trust and depend on each other. They face difficult situations with a great deal of courage and a great deal of bickering and snarking, just like teenagers. I didnt find a sour note in any of it. Recommendation: Witches and secret organizations have been done before but Armstrong definitely adds her own twists and flavor to the tale. The only drawback is the fact that these are definitely a part of a series there is no overall resolution at the end but its still a worthwhile read.
My Years of Reading Seriously (blog) (http://cjreading.blogspot.com/2009/05/book-review-awakening-by-kelley.html)

The Awakening is the second part of Kelley Armstrongs Darkest Powers trilogy. Since it is part of a trilogy the Darkest Powers books need to be read in order. If you havent read The Summoning, the first book in the trilogy, stop this review reading now - youre about to encounter major spoilers for that book! Written for Young Adults, The Awakening follows the continuing adventures of fifteen year-old Chloe who is struggling to deal with her newly found talent for raising the dead. Set in Kelley Armstrongs Otherworld, readers familiar with the authors earlier fantasy novels (written for adults) will recognise that Chloe is a necromancer so ghosts and zombies are going to be a permanent part of her life from now on. If the trauma of raising dead things from their graves isnt enough for Chloe she also has to deal with the knowledge that her birth was the result of a genetic experiment by supernaturally-inclined scientists and, even worse, those scientists now want their science project back. The Awakening starts from exactly where The Summoning finished. Chloes escape attempt from the group home where she was being kept with other teenaged supernaturals from the same genetic experiment had failed. Split up from her fellow-escapees - Derek, a werewolf on the brink of his first change and Simon, his sorcerer brother Chloe has been captured and transferred to a more secure facility. The opening scenes of the story find Chloe already plotting her next escape and as soon as she sees her opportunity she takes it - since snooping has already confirmed her worst fears about her chances for survival if she is deemed a failed experiment. The Awakening continues to be narrated in first person by Chloe. Her character makes an engaging protagonist who should appeal to a wide age range of readers from pre-teens through to adults. Like The Summoning, the pacing in this story is fast and furious; making a one or two sitting reading is a distinct possibility. Apart from the escaping, and the running, and the half-rotted zombies, The Awakening concentrates on trust with the unspoken question of Who can Chloe trust? running as a recurring theme through out the story. As the teenage runaways realise that the consequence of capture is most likely going to be their own deaths they have to trust each other and trust in their untried abilities to control their new found supernatural powers or risk re-capture. Packed full of urban fantasy action The Awakening is a good follow-up to The Summoning that builds up momentum for the final part of this trilogy while still maintaining its own exciting plot - even if it doesnt have any vampires in it! Rated at 4.5 out of 5 (I knocked off half a star for the lack of vampires) still no graphic to illustrate half stars though!

But Nicholas grows weaker with each passing day. Perenelle is still trapped in Alcatraz, and now that Scatty has gone missing, the group is without protection. Except for Clarent--the twin sword to Excalibur. But Clarent's power is unthinkable, its evil making it nearly impossible to use without its darkness seeping into the soul of whoever wields it.
If he hopes to defeat Dee, Nicholas must find an Elder who can teach Josh and Sophie the third elemental magic--Water Magic. The problem? The only one who can do that is Gilgamesh, and he is quite, quite insane.

Orange Beach, Alabama is a simple town filled with simple people. But like all humans on the planet, the good folks of Orange Beach have their share of problems - marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as the many other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses.
Fortunately, when things look the darkest - a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. An elderly man with white hair, of indiscriminate age and race, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and leather flip flops carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul. Communicating what he calls "a little perspective," Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss. "Your time on this earth is a gift to be used wisely," he says. "Don't squander your words or your thoughts. Consider even the simplest action you take, for your lives matter beyond
    measure x2026;and they matter forever."
Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what we can do about it.
Like The Traveler's Gift, The Noticer is a unique narrative is a blend of fiction, allegory, and inspiration. Gifted storyteller Andy Andrews helps us see how becoming a "noticer" just might change a person's life forever.

His book The Five Love Languages is a regular on the New York Times Best Sellers list--even after being in print for fifteen years--and has made the term "love language" a part of everyday speech. Love Is a Verb takes his teaching to the next level. Rather than a typical marriage self-help book filled with lengthy explanations of principles and techniques, it is a compilation of true stories displaying love in action. These stories--written by everyday people--go straight to the hearts of readers, who often say that illustrations are the most effective parts of a book. Gary Chapman adds a "Love Lesson" to each story, showing readers how they can apply the same principles to their own relationships.

He is looked to by many as the epitome of the success and significance that is highly valued in our culture. He also works every day with young men who are trying to achieve significance through football and all that goes with a professional athletic career-such as money, power, and celebrity. Coach Dungy has had all that, but he passionately believes that there is a different path to significance, a path characterized by attitudes, ambitions, and allegiances that are all too rare but uncommonly rewarding. "Uncommon" reveals lessons on achieving significance that the coach has learned from his remarkable parents, his athletic and coaching career, his mentors, and his journey with God. A particular focus of the book: what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models.

<![CDATA['Who's Got Your Back']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780385521338"; By: Ferrazzi, KeithDisregard the myth of the lone professional "superman" and the rest of our culture's go-it alone mentality. The real path to success in your work and in your life is through creating an inner circle of "lifeline relationships" - deep, close relationships with a few key trusted individuals who will offer the encouragement, feedback, and generous mutual support every one of us needs to reach our full potential. Whether your dream is to lead a company, be a top producer in your field, overcome the self-destructive habits that hold you back, lose weight or make a difference in the larger world, Who's Got Your Back will give you the roadmap you've been looking for to achieve the success you deserve.
Keith Ferrazzi, the internationally renowned thought leader, consultant, and bestselling author of Never Eat Alone, shows us that becoming a winner in any field of endeavor requires a trusted team of advisors who can offer guidance and help to hold us accountable to achieving our goals. It is the reason PH.D candidates have advisor teams, top executives have boards, world class athletes have fitness coaches, and presidents have cabinets.
In this step-by-step guide to the powerful principles behind personal growth and change, you'll learn how to:
    - Master the mindsets that will help you to build deeper, more trusting ""lifeline relationships""
    - Overcome the career-crippling habits that hold you back, once and for all
    - Get further, faster by setting goals in a dramatically more powerful way
    - Use "sparring" as a productive tool to make the decisions that will fuel personal success
    - Replace the yes men in your life with those who get it and care - and will hold you accountable to achieving your goals
    - Lower your guard and let others help
None of us can do it alone. We need the perspective and advice of a trusted team. And in Who's Got Your Back, Keith Ferrazzi shows us how to put our own "dream team" together.

<![CDATA['Outliers']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780316017923"; By: Gladwell, MalcolmIn this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Brilliant and entertaining, OUTLIERS is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

<![CDATA['The Age of the Unthinkable']]> Mon, 29 Jun 2009 17:41:02 CDT 9780316118088"; By: Ramo, Joshua CooperToday the very ideas that made America great imperil its future. Our plans go awry and policies fail. History's grandest war against terrorism creates more terrorists. Global capitalism, intended to improve lives, increases the gap between rich and poor. Decisions made to stem a financial crisis guarantee its worsening. Environmental strategies to protect species lead to their extinction.
The traditional physics of power has been replaced by something radically different. In The Age of the Unthinkable, Joshua Cooper Ramo puts forth a revelatory new model for understanding our dangerously unpredictable world. Drawing upon history, economics, complexity theory, psychology, immunology, and the science of networks, he describes a new landscape of inherent unpredictability--and remarkable, wonderful possibility.
