This fine third installment in the American Birding Association's State Field Guide Series covers more than 70 categories of bird species for the entire state. Beginning with a substantial introduction that includes popular birding sites and a glossary of ornithological terms, this handbook provides a great overview of where, when, and how to birdwatch in the Sunshine State. Over 300 types of birds receive individual listings featuring key details. Some give exact spots to see the species ("One or more individuals usually winter at Castellow Hammock Park south of Miami") while others give interesting facts. ("The red-whiskered bulbul is native to India and was previously popular as a cagebird. In 1960, a few bulbuls imported from Calcutta escaped from a facility south of Miami.") The 545 accompanying photographs are beautiful, and they also act as the perfect complement to the text, allowing birders to use this guide as a fantastic identification tool. The combination of clear and concise writing and dynamic artwork makes this a birding guide that is as enjoyable to read in the house as it is comprehensive and informative in the field. (Dec.)
