More About Amulets by Sheila Paine

Overview
A rabbit's foot, colourful pompoms, a cross, a shell necklace, a strip of fabric, an eye' - amulets are almost universal to all cultures and take a variety of different forms. This book exploits this variety by taking a thematic approach to the study of amulets across the world from past to present. Sheila Paine explores the function of amulets in bringing good luck or preventing bad luck, in protecting against evil, illness, accident or misfortune, and the symbolism of the different types of objects held to hold such powers. Each chapter looks at different types of amulet and symbolism, including the hanging of a woolly lamb or teddy bear on houses in Albania to protect the building from the evil eye, feline amulets of Japan worn to ward off evil spirits, painted eggs of the Ukraine designed to protect domestic animals and the family home and powerfully pungent greenery placed over doorways to confuse witches, fairies and malefactors and prevent their entry.
