Many parents-to-be want to break out of the traditional mold of blue for boys and pink for girls; McCafferty’s lovely book presents 30 ways for the crafters in a baby’s life to do just that. Smartly focusing on accessories, stuffed animals, and blankets instead of hard-to-fit clothes, she provides lots of adorable, simple projects so that even a busy crocheter can whip up a cute gift, such as a heart rattle or a teething ring, in very little time. For those with more ambition, there are also more complex projects, such as a stunning striped “Pixie Gnome Hat” or a doily rug that could easily survive the transition from nursery to child’s room. McCafferty also provides basic crocheting instructions, which should be good enough to remind readers who’ve already tried the craft what to do; newbies may want to supplement with a better set of instructions or online videos.
