Overview
It's the seventh ridiculous day of August 1971. A drought has besieged Red Clover, SC and the heart of seventeen-year-old Karlene Bridges, former national spelling champion. Her big sister Gloria Jean is pregnant, and everyone carries on as if she were incubating the Light of this World, but Karlene is hysterical about becoming an aunt at such a young age. And ever since former heartthrob Billy Ray Jenkins joined the United States Navy six months ago, she cannot stop thinking about him. Her best friend Lucinda tells Karlene she needs to quit reading all those Ralph Waldo Emerson essays and participate in Lucinda's favorite sport, which she calls the bewilderment of boys. But Karlene's mother has been pointing her in an entirely different direction since the day she was born. To soothe her jangled nerves, Karlene befriends Spencer, lead singer for the Weevils, and takes up songwriting, but he gets drafted, which antagonizes Karlene because he will likely end up in Vietnam. Her former Latin teacher steps into the picture and insists Karlene apply for a scholarship to her alma mater Smith College. But when an unthinkable tragedy strikes, the whole town is devastated, especially Karlene who dives into the deep end of her own life and tries not to drown. Bewilderment of Boys is the sequel to Luddy's award winning novel Spelldown. Through the eyes of its sharp-witted, big-hearted protagonist, Luddy delivers not only a heartrending love story, but also a compelling narrative about a sharp-witted young woman who attempts to solve the riddle of life itself with grace and aplomb.
