Reviews:
"Mills, who began his career in music videos, saturates the soundtrack with underground icons and captures the shaggy, sun-dappled essence of ’70s Southern California in nearly every frame -- a wry, tender tribute not just to a beloved parent, but a lost era." -- Grade: A- - 12/20/2016 Entertainment Weekly

"Bening, in one of her most relaxed and organic performances, manages to create a multifaceted person from fragments -- the punchy scenes, era-connecting anecdotes, and revealing tête-à-têtes through which 20TH CENTURY WOMEN unfolds." - 12/20/2016 A.V. Club

4 stars out of 4 -- "The film is a portrait of a group of people at a specific moment in time, how they lived, what they fought about, what music they listened to, what they ate and what they cared about. Nothing is irrelevant with that approach." - 12/23/2016 RogerEbert.com

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Annette Bening is simply glorious....20TH CENTURY WOMEN unfolds as series of small moments -- some hilarious and heartfelt, other silly and sorrowful -- that help define the characters and their time." - 12/28/2016 Rolling Stone

"The personal is the political, as second-wave feminists liked to say, and so it is in 20TH CENTURY WOMEN. The politics sneak up on you, filtered through the intimate lives of its electrically alive characters." - 12/27/2016 New York Times

"The beauty of Bening’s performance lies in those marvelously suggestive layers -- all the delicate, tendril-like emotional possibilities that she manages to tuck into the margins of any given moment." - 12/27/2016 Los Angeles Times

"The best thing about the movie is Bening’s performance as Dorothea Fields, who’s portrayed as a very particular kind of contradictory free spirit." - 10/07/2016 Variety

"Crudup, Gerwig and Fanning are superb -- but this is Annette Bening’s movie, and she delivers one of the finest performances of her career..." - 01/12/2017 Chicago Sun-Times

"[I]t’s buffeted by a wicked sense of humor and Mills’s distinctive visual approach, honed during his years making music videos and TV ads." - 01/13/2017 The Atlantic

"Bening is simply wonderful; the performance is sharp, careworn, individualistic, and wholly free of vanity." - 01/12/2017 Boston Globe

"[The film] lifts us up on a wave of openhearted emotion and keen intelligence. It bursts with the sad, messy, ungovernable beauty of life." - 01/12/2017 Washington Post

"[T]he sheer likability of these lived-in characters is a powerful magnet, thanks to insightful writing and a note-perfect ensemble anchored by a never-better Annette Bening..." - 10/07/2017 Hollywood Reporter

4 stars out of 5 -- "In a way, the story echoes the feeling of memory, and for all the tumult and confusion besetting the protagonists, the film is bathed in a golden glow." - 02/07/2017 Empire
