DIRTY MINES also addresses the rich history of this era, including the spearhead of union organizing in America-by the Molly Mcquires who were beaten, falsely imprisoned, and even murdered by the coal companies and their allies in government. It describes the Knox Mine disaster which ended coal mining in northeastern Pennsylvania when a Mafia-controlled company illegally dug underneath the Susquehanna River and caused it to collapse. This is a story of the last generation of Scranton coal miners and their families, a narrative of sacrifice, humor and love of men who endured gas leaks, cave-ins, and black lung disease so that their children could be educated and become successful doctors, lawyers, and engineers. DIRTY MINES celebrates their unique heritage which has been forgotten by too many
