Overview
The Ninth Cavalry struck by helicopter deep within remote enemy base areas and liberated zones. Here is a harrowing firsthand account of mortal combat with the aviators and soldiers of the First Air Cavalry Division's reconnaissance squadron. "The Division's Expendables" is how one division commander described the 1/9th Cavalry's aero-rifle infantry platoons, called "Blues," meaning that in hopeless situations, only they would be lost. Included is an account of an air-ground raid that killed more high-ranking officers (nine in total) than any similar engagement of the Vietnam War. The fifteen-minute raid overran a regimental command post as a division-level offensive was being jointly planned between the regimental commander and his staff and the senior staff of an enemy division.
