Lane’s contemporary series launch sizzles from the moment Cassie McPherson’s hired escort appears to accompany her to the company Christmas party. Cassie, a workaholic eager to avoid fix ups from her overcurious family, doesn’t know that her “date” is really James Sutton, whose rival construction company threatens the McPhersons’ family business. Once he demonstrates his good looks, charm, and skill in the bedroom, she’s determined to keep him around, until she and her protective brothers learn James’s identity. The romance is inevitable, but Lane (Catch Me a Cowboy) makes the couple work for it, writing with warmth and humor. Readers will forgive the occasional contrived misunderstanding and adore James, Cassie, and the affectionately jocular McPhersons. Agent: Laura Bradford, Bradford Literary Agency. (Oct.)
