In a craftily engineered book, readers transform everyday food items into hidden animals by opening half-page flaps that expand each spread. Look, its 1 donut. Or is it something else? Baruzzi begins; pulling the flap to the right changes the doughnut into a lounging cat, the golden ring becoming part of the animals round face and curling tail. Elsewhere, tuliplike petals of a flower become the combs of three roosters, and a chocolate-brown ice cream pop forms the shells of a group of nine tortoises. The chatty narrative and the sheer imaginative fun of the transformations create a charming guessing game. Up to age 3. (Sept.)
