Half-human Marcus Thorne grew up in the land of the fae without knowing his parents, but after his reconnection with them, he chooses to live in the human world and prepare to inherit his father’s title. That means leaving behind Cecelia Hewitt, the fae woman he’d hoped to marry. Months later, Marcus learns his family supports his marriage to Cecelia, but now she has obligations elsewhere and declines his proposal. Marcus pursues her anyway, but he will have to resolve her family secret in order to clear the path to true love. The third book of Falkner’s paranormal Regency series (following The Magic of “I Do”) has a nice leading couple and a cute secondary pairing, but the promising premise is underserved by inconsistent and faltering storytelling. Characters don’t remember what they said just pages earlier, problems disappear effortlessly, and the nonromantic elements of the book feel like filler. A too-pat ending redeeming the cross-series villain is the sour icing on a disappointing cake. Agent: Melissa Jeglinski, Knight Agency. (Jan.)
