Irish rebellion, smuggled guns, and the assassination of American president James Garfield form a lively backdrop for this sweet, sexy, and smartly told Victorian romance. Lady Arianne Chambers is called "Cupid's Mistress" for her matchmaking prowess, but when Michael Rafferty hears the nickname, he assumes its origin lies in more salacious arenas. Such a rocky beginning doesn't lead to smooth sailing, particularly when the pair wind up on a diplomatic mission to America, with Arianne posing as Rafferty's wife to further his position as the head British representative stationed in Washington, D.C. Arianne's self-doubts, caused by familial circumstances and her past history with men, are balanced by her strength of will, while Rafferty is charming and manly. Readers will hope for an equally enticing sequel starring Rafferty's companion, stage magician Phineas Connor. (Aug.)
