Romain dishes up a charming Christmas Regency confection complete with a sassy dowager aunt, a virginal bluestocking, and a pair of rakish cousins vying for the opportunity to despoil said virgin or at the very least compromise her pristine reputation. Alexander Edgware, earl of Xavier, is renowned for his annual days-long Christmas party, featuring over-the-top holiday dining, imbibing, and games at a sumptuous Surrey estate. After Xavier's cousin, the marquess of Lockwood, challenges him to invite a debutante and see whether she can withstand the debauchery, Louisa Oliver and her aunt join the fun. When Louisa stumbles upon the truth behind Xavier's invitation, Xavier and Lockwood begin to openly vie for her attentions. Eventually, following several bouts of playful persiflage, Louisa learns which bachelor is heartless and which has a heart of true gold. A sweet treat for Regency fans.
