Overview
This is the story of the St. Patrick's Battalion (San Patricios), which was composed primarily of American soldiers who chose to fight under the Mexican flag in the U.S.-Mexican War. Robert Ryal Miller narrates the history of the more than two hundred American deserters (many of them Irish immigrants) who joined the Mexican army to fight against their former countrymen. They shot at Americans at Matamoros, Monterrey, Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, and Churubusco. At the last battle, U.S. forces captured eighty-five San Patricios and tried seventy-two for desertion. Fifty were executed; others were whipped and branded. Treated as traitors by the United States, they were viewed instead as heroes by the Mexican government, which awarded them honors and erected a monument to them.
