Overview

"I felt torn between two worlds. Each with its own mystery. One more captivating than the other, but the other more real and breathing."

It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream--reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family's undoing.

At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren's past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It's thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.

Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.

Sam, Lauren, and their son Ryan had a quiet, happy life in Muncie, Ind., until Sam feels the call to be a missionary to remote villages in Nepal. Despite Lauren and Ryans obvious misery over the decision, they go. While Sam treks through the Himalayan villages for weeks at a time, Lauren tries to hold down the fort for herself and her son. Despite Laurens best efforts, Ryan continues to deteriorate under the weight of loneliness and depression. No longer close to his mother, and hating his father, he disconnects from everyone and everything. While Sam finds purpose in his calling, he cant see past the Nepali people into his own sons heart. Lauren, lonely and in despair over her sons emotional and rebellious state, reconnects with an old friend from high school. Aidan comes back into her life at seemingly the perfect time for both of them, but Lauren doesnt realize how rekindling that special friendship could further affect her family. As events push Sam and Lauren apartthe family struggles to keep together and Ryan begins to wonder if things will ever be the same again. In this fine novel, Phoenix (Tangled Webs) realistically captures the deep struggles enveloping a missionary family. Agent: Chip MacGregor, MacGregor Literary (Dec.)
