Overview

This sequel to the seminal '90s indie smash TRAINSPOTTING catches up with its quartet of Scottish junkies 20 years later. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) finally returns to Edinburgh after a long exile in Amsterdam, and he soon reunites with his old pals Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Spud (Ewen Bremner). As he tries to help Spud kick his heroin addiction and gets caught up in a scheme to open a brothel with Sick Boy, Renton is targeted by the sociopathic Begbie (Robert Carlyle), who wants revenge for his past misdeeds. Danny Boyle directed this follow-up, which is partly based on author Irvine Welsh's 2002 novel, PORNO.

Reviews:
4 stars out of 5 -- "Once more, Boyle’s direction is the star here. Busy with verbs, spiky with life, the film fizzes along to a fantastic soundtrack of new friends and remixed favourites..." - 01/21/2017 Total Film

3 stars out of 5 -- "McGregor and Miller play the shifting dynamics between friends well -- especially one who double crossed the other -- and their relationship is the driving engine of the story." - 01/19/2017 Empire

4 stars out of 5 -- "It is a worthy sequel to what has become a sacred original, respecting the rough edges of its forerunner while putting middle-aged flesh on the once raw ribcages of its oddly sympathetic subjects." - 01/29/2017 The Guardian

"If you long for the gritty charms of mid-‘90s indie cinema in general and TRAINSPOTTING specifically, T2 TRAINSPOTTING gives you exactly that." - 03/17/2017 RogerEbert.com

"That T2 succeeds is a tribute to the way the first film, based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, created characters of such vitality that they remain in the actors’ bones to this day." - 03/15/2017 Los Angeles Times

"Mr. Boyle reprises the dodgy camera angles and tricky visuals that beckon us back to the first film with shameless deliberation....T2 never strays too far from laughs..." - 03/16/2017 New York Times

3 stars out of 4 -- "Boyle and his actors offer a funny, touching and vital take on smack-addled Peter Pans facing the formidable foe of middle age." - 03/15/2017 Rolling Stone

"The good news is that the film’s four lead actors all slip seamlessly back into their onscreen alter egos as if they’ve been keeping tabs on them all these years. Boyle, too, taps right back into the first film’s signature kaleidoscopic surrealism." -- Grade: B - 03/16/2017 Entertainment Weekly

"Boyle has delivered that rare follow-up nearly as enthralling as the original." - 03/23/2017 Chicago Sun-Times
