Amber Jameson has always thought of her best friend Cade as an older brother. A really hot older brother. But growing up in foster care, she learned to rely only on herself. In the steamy third Silver Creek contemporary (after Untouched), Yates spins a tale of a bad girl gone good. Amber Jameson earned a reputation for wildness while living in Silver Creek, Ore., with her grandparents, and the town won’t let her forget it. Amber’s best friend, Cade Mitchell, was injured in a rodeo when his ride was sabotaged by an unknown antagonist, and now he lives with pain and a limp. Cade feels aimless without his rodeo dream, and he also has a bad rep to overcome. To prevent the sale of Amber’s grandfather’s debt-ridden ranch, Cade impulsively tells a potential buyer that he’s moving in with Amber to fix the place up. Can friendship survive when hot sexual elements are added? Yates plops believable characters into awkward situations and constructs a solid family dynamic, complete with secrets, anger, intrigue, and love. (Aug.)
Romance: Cowboy, come home
A friends-with-benefits situation threatens the status quo of two prickly yet appealing characters in Unbroken by Maisey Yates. When a riding accident ends Cade Mitchell’s rodeo career, he returns to the family ranch broken and bitter. But his longtime best buddy, Amber Jameson, is there to help ease his pain. No wonder he goes caveman when an old rival arrives, sniffing around Amber’s grandfather’s ranch and pressuring her to sell. Without thought, Cade steps forward and tells the man to back off—he’s moving in to help spruce up the ranch because Amber’s his girlfriend. Their town of Silver Creek seems delighted by the “romance,” though both Cade and Amber are left feeling unbalanced by the new—and passionate—feelings that begin to boil. These two lonely hearts are moving toward believing they might find an ever after when events come about that could tear them apart as friends—and as lovers. Witty repartee and strong sexual chemistry between the leads make this a standout contemporary romance.
