Overview

A devout Puritan family in 1630s New England are exiled from their village, and struggle to survive in their new home situated at the edge of a mysterious forest. The sinister, witching forces in the wilderness emerge silently to terrorize them, first by kidnapping the youngest of their five children. As their life-sustaining crops fail, the clan fall victim to paranoia and fear as they begin to turn on one another, eventually suspecting teenage daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) of witchcraft. With the vast majority of the dialogue culled from primary sources from the time period, Robert Eggers' debut feature THE WITCH is a terrifying glimpse into a family descending into madness.

Reviews:
"Judiciously gory but never bloodthirsty....Its blanket of moonlit dread is certainly form-fitting; the narrative pokiness and precisely composed visuals place it firmly in the cult horror world..." - 02/18/2016 Los Angeles Times

"As straight horror, THE WITCH is something special, transporting audiences to a bygone era that would look plenty frightening even without the paranormal activity that engulfs it." - 02/18/2016 A.V. Club

"It's an ensemble drama about a faithless family on the verge of self-destruction. And it is about women, and the patriarchal stresses that lead to their disenfranchisement." - 02/18/2016 RogerEbert.com

"Much of what makes Eggers’ script so strong is his use of extensive research into court documents and historical records of witchcraft from the period when the film is set." - 02/18/2016 Chicago Sun-Times

"[T]his startling, assured feature debut from New Hampshire-born, Brooklyn-based writer-director Robert Eggers has one foot in early American history and another in legend and fairy tale." - 02/18/2016 Boston Globe

"[A] crafty calling card brimming with beauty and terror. Eggers pulls us into the supernatural with subtle cunning and meticulous attention to detail." - 02/18/2016 Rolling Stone

4 stars out of 5 -- "THE WITCH favours verisimilitude, formal exactitude and insidious dread over cheap shocks." - 03/05/2016 Total Film

4 stars out of 5 -- "As Eggers escalates the tension, his cast respond admirably. Ineson’s guttural Yorkshire snarl has never been better employed, as William finds fault in anyone but himself, while Kate Dickie is typically intense as his grieving wife." - 03/07/2016 Empire

4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]riter-director Robert Eggers’s Sundance prize-winning feature debut is an atmospheric chiller rooted in the fertile soil of religious zealotry, social isolation and original sin." - 03/13/2016 The Guardian

"Robert Eggers’s debut film, The Witch, is made with all the assuredness of one who’s a veteran master of horror." - 02/24/2016 The Guardian
