Written by a sports magazine editor, this devotional is built around a sports "game plan" that is designed to appeal to children aged 8 to 12. Author Dave Branon says that having a plan to win is every bit as important for Christians as it is for athletes: "Kids can't be passive if they want to be successful Christians."
Using sports terminology--and language that the book's target audience can readily understand--Branon offers ninety-three different game plans for victory, all built around anecdotes, principles, and biblical references that are familiar to most Christians.
Although much of the book seems directed toward boys, the author makes an obvious effort to keep female readers in the loop. There are frequent references to female athletes and, indeed, the foreword was written by women's soccer star Michelle Akers.
Branon mixes stories about athletes with stories about biblical figures without ever deviating from the declared spiritual mission of the book.
This book is highly recommended, both for its writing style and its content. --Naomi Branch for A Closer Look
