Vardhika Shafapadt.--This is the name of the metre of this Purana; one verse consists of six feet, or lines, which are called in Canarese poetry "charana," or "pada," i. e. foot. Therefore such a verse is called "Shatapadi," i. e. a stanza of six feet. Such stanzas are scanned by the matras. A short syllable is one matra; a long one is two matras. The first foot has 20 matras; the second has also twenty matras; the third foot must have 32 matras; the fourth and fifth foot are lines the first and second, and at last the sixth is line the third.
