Almayer's Folly
Overview
Almayer's Folly is a novel written by Joseph Conrad and published in 1895. The story is set in the late 19th century in the Dutch East Indies, and follows the life of a Dutch trader named Kaspar Almayer. Almayer is obsessed with finding a legendary gold mine in the region, and his greed and ambition lead him to make questionable decisions that ultimately ruin his life. The novel explores themes of colonialism, racism, and the clash of cultures between the European colonizers and the native people of the Indies. Almayer's daughter, Nina, is half-Dutch and half-Malay, and her struggle to find her place in a society that rejects her is a major theme of the novel.Conrad's writing style is characterized by his use of vivid descriptions and his exploration of the psychological motivations of his characters. Almayer's Folly is considered one of Conrad's early masterpieces and a classic of English literature. At last the excitement had died out in Sambir. The inhabitants got used to the sight of comings and goings between Almayer's house and the vessel, now moored to the opposite bank, and speculation as to the feverish activity displayed by Almayer's boatmen in repairing old canoes ceased to interfere with the due discharge of domestic duties by the women of the Settlement. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
