Overview
Andria is a play written by the Roman playwright Terence in 166 BC. It is a comedy of manners that revolves around the love affairs of two young men, Pamphilus and Charinus, and their relationships with two young women, Andria and Philumena. Pamphilus, the son of a wealthy Athenian, has fallen in love with Andria, a girl from a poor family. Charinus, his friend, is in love with Philumena, who is pregnant with his child. The play explores the themes of love, marriage, and social class, and the characters' struggles to reconcile their desires with the expectations of their families and society. The plot is driven by a series of misunderstandings and mistaken identities, as well as the interference of various characters, including the scheming slave Davus and the overbearing father, Simo. Ultimately, the play ends happily, with the couples united and the families reconciled. Andria is regarded as one of Terence's most successful plays, and it remains a popular work in the canon of Roman comedy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
