Movie Reviews
Reviews:
"[B]eautifully staged and sharply acted by a cast adept at balancing wit and romance." - 02/03/2020 Hollywood Reporter
"Screenwriter Eleanor Catton does deft work adapting the novel, not only retaining all of the plot points that matter, but also keeping in plenty of the ones that don’t, as this is a story that should always be able to accommodate stray tangents..." - 02/03/2020 Variety
"De Wilde’s stylish, stylized EMMA doesn’t rewrite the Austen playbook, but it shakes it up a bit --emphasizing the stakes of Emma’s careless meddling and adding a spiky 21st-century sensibility to Austen’s 19th-century ode to checking your privilege." - 02/17/2020 A.V. Club
"[T]old with just enough flair and attention to detail to make it stand out." - 02/18/2020 The Atlantic
"This latest colourful incarnation boasts the remarkable Anya Taylor-Joy as Austen’s 'handsome, clever and rich' heroine Emma Woodhouse..." - 02/16/2020 The Guardian
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Autumn de Wilde’s approach to this tale of frenzied and complicated social activity is both elegant and comedic. Charm is one of the hardest qualities to capture, and there is genuine charm here." - 02/21/2020 RogerEbert.com
"The new EMMA, directed by Autumn de Wilde, making a confident feature debut, is set in an early 19th century that has been shrewdly retrofitted for modern-age sensibilities." - 02/20/2020 New York Times
4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] gorgeously filmed, deliciously wicked, and sometimes wounding film version of Jane Austen’s literary classic..." - 02/19/2020 Rolling Stone
"The setting de Wilde conjures is therefore appropriately delicate and exacting. It looks like a bespoke wedding cake, a series of fine estates in the rolling English countryside, each bursting with manicured rooms painted in different pastel shades." - 02/19/2020 The Atlantic
"A very satisfying new version of Jane Austen’s sprightly novel has been directed in high style by Autumn de Wilde..." - 04/07/2020 Los Angeles Times
"de Wilde has made a film that knows it charms and amuses with just how much it crowds its perfect frames.” - 03/03/2020 Film Comment
"Austen’s trick -- repeated here by de Wilde -- is in making us believe, for a minute, that matters of the heart matter more than anything else on Earth.” - 12/23/2020 Washington Post
