Overview

When he was two years old, Hunter was badly injured in a car accident that killed his mother and baby sister. In 2015, he suffered the devastating loss of his beloved big brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer at the age of 46. Throughout the Trump administration, Hunter was the target of nonstop attacks and slurs by the president and his cronies. These hardships were compounded by the collapse of his marriage and a years-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

Beautiful Things details Hunter’s descent into substance abuse and his tortuous path to sobriety. Hunter writes about the ways in which his father, Joe, called, listened without judgment, showed up at his door, and refused to let him fade away. He also talks about his professional life including his work for the World Food Bank USA and his controversial seat on the board of the energy company Burisma. The story ends with where Hunter is today—a sober married man with a new baby and the forty-sixth president of The United States for a father, finally able to appreciate the beautiful things in life.

Hunter writes: “From the moment of his diagnosis less than two years earlier, and throughout those many procedures, Beau’s mantra to me became two words: ‘beautiful things.’ He insisted that when he got well, we would dedicate our lives to appreciating and cultivating the world’s boundless beauty. ‘Beautiful things’ became a catch-all for relationships and places and moments—for everything... It was our code for a renewed outlook on life. We would never again let ourselves get too tired, too distracted, too cynical, too thrown off course by whatever blindsiding hurdle life threw in our way, to look, to see, to love.”
