Overview
Chen Liang, originally named Runeng, courtesy name Tongfu, art name Longchuan, and known as "Master Longchuan", was a leading figure of the "Yongkang School" in the Southern Song Dynasty. He was generous, upright and unconventional, hailed as "a dragon among men, a tiger among writers". On the one hand, this book gives a detailed account of how Chen Liang, as an unofficial scholar and patriotic intellectual outside the imperial court, repeatedly submitted memorials to the emperor, pointed out the current political abuses, and strongly advocated resisting the Jin Dynasty and recovering the lost territories. On the other hand, it provides an incisive analysis of the formation and development of Chen Liang's thought, as well as the process and outcome of his philosophical debates with Zhu Xi and other great Confucian scholars of the Southern Song Dynasty. Possessing extraordinary talent and eloquence, Chen Liang took delight in military affairs, and his life was closely intertwined with the political changes of the Southern Song Dynasty. He advocated the "School of Practical Achievements" aimed at governing the state and benefiting the people, which is now regarded as the origin of the Yongkang School. He put forward the idea that "what fills the universe is nothing but things, and what fills daily life is nothing but affairs", sharply criticizing the empty talk of "moral nature" by the neo-Confucian scholars of his time. Chen Liang, his deeds and his writings still shine brightly after hundreds of years, sufficiently moving and inspiring people of the present era.
