I Dare Not Describe : Book Four in the Cacouna Saga
by Barbara Burgess

Overview -
It is 1759 and the British have just won the Battle on the Plains of Abraham. Isabelle remembers the caves on Cacouna Island where she hid out as a child with her family. She takes her granddaughter and great granddaughter with her to the caves. A few Acadian families are hiding on the island, too, in order to avoid capture by the British. Pierre, an Acadian, and Claire, Isabelle's great granddaughter, strike up a friendship that has unexpected consequences.Excerpt: Golden fields of tall-standing corn lie on one side of the road. It must be late summer, almost harvest time. Below the road, apart from a couple of simple houses, I see mainly woods, and, through the leaves, the river gleaming below. I can't see the rocky beach, but I know it's there. It's always been there. It's early evening, still light, as Cacouna is quite far north and the sun sets late in summertime. The night feels warm. I glance at Pierre. His eyes-wide open in surprise-and his audible rapid breathing reveal to me that he's shocked. "We have travelled to another time," I whisper. "Isabelle very recently told me this happened to her once. That's how I know about the magic in the cave mural. Don't be afraid. She was able to return to her old time."
