Before that time, the world was under the belief that the divine right of kings ruled the rest of the less fortunate and more ignorant classes of people. The proverbial cat of freedom was let out of the bag of biblical dignity, and the commoner found himself on the same playing field of God's grace as the king was on.It was the Christian faith that was bringing this new found freedom to the world. During the first few centuries on this side of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the church was canonizing the official Christian Scriptures, defining its understanding of the nature of Christ, and clarifying issues of theology proper. The confessions of the church are not inerrant like the bible, but they do articulate what the early church sweat drops of blood over, and even gave their lives to protect and promulgate across the globe.Their are two texts in particular that stand above the fray, not on the same shelf as the Bible, which stands alone as God's inerrant Word, but in close proximity due to their place in history: The Westminster Confession of faith, and its Baptist Alternative, the Second London Baptist Confession of 1689. While the Bible is the Divine writings of one God through many authors over hundreds of years, this confession, the 1689, was written by several pastors of that era, and is essential to understanding doctrine that has become what is considered to be the standard for reformed orthodox Baptist theology.The Baptist Catechism is a critical supplement to the confession, and is a massive benefit for any parent wanting to seriously train their child. Walking alongside of the confession, the catechism provides an invaluable resource for fathers and mothers to use during family worship - quoting from the confession, and immediately following up with a catechism question and its supplemental bible references.
