Overview
In the beginning there was John. Soon after, there was a ukulele and John, then there was skiffle music and John. Next came the Quarry Men, with their pseudo rockabilly, with John on guitar and various friends playing on an assortment of items, including drums, guitar, a tea-chest and sometimes a washtub bass, a using a washboard. John and his Quarry Men friends performed when and where they could. The band rode aboard a tray-back truck, playing their music, as part of the Rose Queen procession, somewhat in awe of pretty Sally Wright, the Rose Queen and all the goings on. The Quarry Men eagerly performed on the stage at the church fete, to passers-by, keen on watching various competitions, buying treats from stalls, watching the Police Dogs in action, the scout demonstrations and rope walk, and taking part in the many games, such as Oink Oink. At the fete, in the St Peter's Church hall, John met Paul.
