Overview
Mr. Xie Juezai, one of the "Five Elders of Yan'an", was a veteran revolutionary who joined the Communist Party of China at an early stage. He passed the imperial examination for the xiucai degree in the late Qing Dynasty in 1905. Before joining the revolution, he had four sons and three daughters with his first wife He Dunxiu in their hometown of Ningxiang, Hunan Province. In September 1937, he married Wang Dingguo at the Eighth Route Army Office in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. The couple had five sons and two daughters, and for years they raised more than ten children of their relatives and friends. This book is a selected collection of Mr. Xie Juezai's family letters, meticulously compiled by Ms. Xie Fei in recent years. It contains 115 family letters written by Mr. Xie Juezai from the 1920s to the 1960s, and the manuscript is divided into three parts. The first series consists of letters written by Xie Juezai to He Dunxiu and their children in his Ningxiang hometown from the 1920s to the 1960s. These letters feature vivid writing and sincere emotions. Apart from expressing his longing for his wife at home, earnest instructions to his children, and fond memories of fellow villagers and old friends, they also touch upon historical events and social changes of the times, including warlord scuffles, life in Yan'an, and the land reform policy after the founding of the People's Republic of China, endowing the letters with considerable historical reference value. The second series covers letters written by Mr. Xie Juezai to his wife Wang Dingguo and their children from the 1950s to the 1970s. The core content includes mutual care between the couple and guidance for their children's education, reflecting the fine conduct of the older generation of revolutionaries-strict self-discipline and setting a good example through their own deeds. The letters also cover topics such as reading, health preservation, and advocating frugality, revealing Mr. Xie Juezai's attitude towards life and personal principles of conducting himself in society, setting an exemplary model for future generations. The third series contains letters written by Xie Juezai to local cadres and friends in his hometown from the 1950s to the 1960s. Through these letters, he kept abreast of the conditions and changes in his hometown, and frequently criticized and educated local cadres for misconduct such as the practice of exaggeration and boasting. Spanning nearly half a century, the more than one hundred letters in this book embody both family affection and hometown affection. They also reflect the turbulence and reforms of an era through the changes of a single family.
