Overview
In 18th century England, the friendship between the failing Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) who governs state matters in her stead, is stirred by the arrival of ambitious servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone). Taken in by Sarah at first because of her charm, Abigail slowly endears herself to the Queen, at Sarah's expense. Bitter resentment ensues, culminating in a behind-the-scenes rivalry between Abigail and Sarah as to who will become the Queen's court favorite. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

Movie Reviews
Reviews:
"[The] fabulously entertaining tragicomedy, THE FAVOURITE, is a juicy power tangle connecting three women in the royal court of early 18th century England, played by a divine trio that bounces off one another with obvious relish." - 08/30/2018 Hollywood Reporter
"THE FAVOURITE is a perfectly cut diamond of a movie -- a finely executed, coldly entertaining entry in the genre of savage misanthropic baroque costume drama." - 11/30/2018 Variety
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A] fiendishly eccentric and entertaining costume drama....Even if this unique absurdist has not exactly been your cup of tea previously, he might finally win you over with this deliciously DANGEROUS LIAISONS-esque and thoroughly female-driven period film, co-written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara." - 11/20/2018 RogerEbert.com
5 stars out of 5 -- " It’s a bawdy, brilliant triumph....Olivia Colman deserves every acting prize on the planet for finding the tragicomic core of Queen Anne..." - 11/20/2018 Rolling Stone
"[T]his deliciously nasty riff on the Jane Austen tradition also has an absurdist streak that, along with its aggressively stylized camerawork, provides an unpredictable high-wire thrill all its own." -- Grade: A- - 11/20/2018 A.V. Club
4 stars out of 5 -- "As uncouth and unleashed as Merchant Ivory is buttoned up, it’s part ribald romp, part pointed character study, part cat-and-mouse psychological thriller, part historical-political machinations." - 12/21/2018 Empire
"Stone and Weisz make wonderful antagonists, Weisz so severe she is almost un-beautiful, Stone the seeming innocent whose glittering eyes see more than they let on." - 11/01/2018 Film Comment
"[I]t feels cruelly, deliciously contemporary, shot through with a sense of modernist absurdity that can be traced back to Greek director Lanthimos’s international break-through feature, DOGTOOTH." - 12/30/2018 The Guardian
"Uproarious certainly -- but Coleman also brought great pathos as the frail, reluctant monarch." - 12/23/2019 Uncut
