C h a r l o t t e B r o n t e (1816–1855) was born in Yorkshire, England, and was a writer of novels and poetry. As the oldest of the Brontë children to survive into adulthood, she helped school her younger siblings. After working as a teacher and a governess and completing language studies in Belgium with her sister Emily, she returned to England to establish a school with her sisters—to no avail— and to finance a book of their joint poetry before her own success as a novelist. She married her father’s colleague, the Reverend Arthur Bell Nichols, in 1854, and died while pregnant the following year.
