Lives of the Spirits is a fact-based adventure story set in the rugged Pacific Northwest in 1801-2. It is the sequel to When Wolf Comes. After seven months in the Makah village of Ozette, Aidan is sent south with his new wife, Neveah, to winter with the Chinook tribe near the mouth of the Columbia River. They paddle their big canoes into a horrific scene of people dying of smallpox, the invisible curse that kills with hideous sores and madness. Their only escape is upriver. Aidan and Neveah must grow up fast as they assemble a disparate group of refugees and begin a 200 mile odyssey up Big River to the Land of She Who Watches. Along the way there are many challenges and they are attacked by a group that wants their trade goods.

Just as they begin to feel safe, Neveah is stolen by the most feared criminal of the region. There is a ransom process, but Aidan is told the vicious Lesheen may not be willing to ransom Neveah because he likes pregnant women. In preparation to go after his wife, Aidan knows he must accept his tamanawos guide, the spirit of his dead friend who taught him to survive in the midst of Native ways. He senses the cost will be more than he imagined, but at stake is Neveah's life and that of their unborn son. Outnumbered and in unfamiliar country, Aidan and a small group go into the mountains on the trail of the outlaws The final shock changes Aidan and Neveah and they struggle to regain who they were. Their is emotional baggage from Neveah's trauma they do not understand, but the thought of separation is inconcievable. Finally there must be another dangerous adventure, a frantic race down Big River that will bring Aidan face to face with the real curse maker.
