Overview
""Rappaccini's Daughter"" is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story is set in Padua, Italy, and revolves around a young man named Giovanni Guasconti, who falls in love with Beatrice Rappaccini, the daughter of a scientist named Dr. Rappaccini. Dr. Rappaccini is known for his experiments with poisonous plants, and it soon becomes clear that Beatrice has been exposed to these poisons from birth, making her toxic to anyone who comes into contact with her. Despite this, Giovanni continues to pursue Beatrice, and the two become deeply entwined. However, their love is doomed from the start, as Dr. Rappaccini has sinister plans for his daughter and those around her. The story explores themes of love, obsession, and the dangers of unchecked scientific experimentation.Nor did he fail again to observe, or imagine, an analogy between the beautiful girl and the gorgeous shrub that hung its gem-like flowers over the fountain; a resemblance which Beatrice seemed to have indulged a fantastic humor in heightening, both by the arrangement of her dress and the selection of its hues. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
