"[I]t rewards patience with a transcendent epilogue that departs from the main character’s point-of-view to find a glimmer of meaning." -- Grade: B+ - 12/20/2016 A.V. Club

"Stripping back his signature style to deliver a stately epic comprising largely static shots accompanied by next to no score, Scorsese nonetheless enthralls..." - 12/10/2016 Total Film

"The movie’s early scenes are filled with severe pictorial beauty..." - 12/22/2016 New York Times

"It’s remarkable how absorbingly, and indelibly, its story takes shape before our eyes." - 12/22/2016 Los Angeles Times

"SILENCE is a remarkable achievement....SILENCE is the largest, most serious-minded examination of faith since Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE..." - 12/10/2016 Variety

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "It's essential filmmaking from the church of Scorsese, a modern master who lives and breathes in the images he puts on screen." - 12/19/2016 Rolling Stone

"[With] many unforgettable sequences of suffering and sorrow, filmed with such force and clarity by Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, it’s difficult not to look away from the screen." - 01/05/2017 Chicago Sun-Times

"The cinematography by the great Rodrigo Prieto uncovers gradations of light and color you didn’t know existed -- the visuals hover between reality and woodcut. As a work of craft, SILENCE is unparalleled." - 01/05/2017 Boston Globe

"The struggle between apostasy and martyrdom -- not when one’s own death is at stake, but when one’s actions determine the fates of others -- is the sharp spearhead of SILENCE....Ultimately both tough and nuanced." - 01/05/2017 Washington Post
