Literary Book Club August 2007 Selection:
This stunning debut novel unfolds as a syllabus for a college literature course including thirty-six chapters named after everything from Othello to Paradise Lost and culminating in a final exam.

Narrated by Blue van Meer, the brilliant teen of an itinerant professor dad during her first year at Harvard, this book takes the reader on a journey that begins with the mysterious death of her butterfly-obsessed mother when Blue is in kindergarten.

After her mother’s death, Blue and her father embarked on a tour of picturesque college towns, never staying longer than one semester until her senior year in high school when they settle in Stockton, North Carolina. Upon entering the elite St. Gallway School she befriends a group of eccentric geniuses and their mentor, film studies teacher Hannah Schneider. But after a suspicious death at Hannah’s house, this new world raises some disturbing questions, and Blue’s life begins to unravel. In one life-changing year, she will unveil a mystery bigger than her own life.

This novel takes the reader on a Nabakovian adventure with a young narrator whose head is full of literary, philosophical, scientific, and cinematic knowledge. Pessl’s debut heralds the arrival of a vibrant new voice in American fiction.
