The Thorn Birds
Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward

Overview -
Based on Colleen McCullough's book, this is the Emmy-winning story of forbidden love. Over the course of four decades, a friendship between a boy and a girl turns sultry and stormy as they mature into adults. The boy becomes a priest and the girl becomes a wife. While Father Ralph is a model of piety, Meggie Cleary is a mother with a family. Though they have separate devotions--God for Father Ralph, a husband for Meggie--their unspoken allegiance is to each other. Will the twosome's longings overpower their better judgment? Notes:
ABC originally broadcast this mini-series -- already controversial because it concerns an adulterous clergyman -- during Holy Week, 1983. Filmmakers used the Los Angeles City Hall and Saint Andrew's Church in Pasadena to serve as the interior and exterior of the Vatican, respectively. In addition, the Drogheda ranch was built in Simi Valley, California for $2,000,000. The entire production cost $20,000,000.
