Overview
This book systematically analyzes, from the three macro dimensions of society, culture, and economy, how globalization constructs "transboundary identity" by expanding social boundaries, blurring cultural boundaries, and opening economic boundaries, while also discussing micro-level individual differences. This book is grounded in the two major paradigms of international migration identity research-the "boundedness" model and the "unboundedness" model. Using the "bounded-unbounded" framework of identity as a guiding thread, and through fieldwork and data analysis, it proposes that the identity of the interviewed Chinese Americans is a combination of "bounded" national and ethnic identity, along with an "unbounded" cultural identity, thus termed "transboundary identity." Specifically, the transboundary identity of Chinese Americans is an integrated construct comprising the primordial and constructed ethnic identity of being Chinese, the political and social national identity of being American, and the open and hybrid dual cultural identity.
