Overview
""Twenty Years' Snipe-Shooting"" is a book written by J.J. Pringle in 1899. The book is a collection of extracts from the daily journal of the game-books of the Snipery, which was a shooting club in Scotland. The author shares his experiences of snipe-shooting over a period of twenty years. The book is divided into four parts, each covering a different period of the author's snipe-shooting career. The author provides detailed descriptions of the snipe-shooting expeditions, including the locations, the weather, the birds, the guns, and the tactics used. The book also includes illustrations and photographs of the birds and the landscapes. The author's love for snipe-shooting is evident in his writing, and he provides valuable insights into the sport. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in snipe-shooting or Scottish hunting culture.Twenty Years Snipe Shooting is a detailed, methodical daily account of Pringles best days afield during 1867-1887, as extracted from his shooting journals. The practice of recording each days hunt was common in Europe but infrequent in North America. Julius Pringle, a wealthy planter, owned Torwood Plantation in Pointe Couple Parish northwest of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He also had holdings near Franklin, Louisiana such as Ashley, Ironwood, and Camperdown, and a plantation near Georgetown, South Carolina. During his last years of shooting, Pringle noted the decline in snipe numbers. He blamed the loss of habitat as the cause. This is very often the chief reason for a species decline, especially in recent times, but in Pringles era the snipe was also a victim of overshooting. Today many of Pringles shooting fields produce sugarcane rather than snipe. This book is a fascinating account of hunting in the late 1800s.
