Looking for a way out and a chance to better himself, he enlisted in the Army at age 19 and became a paratrooper in the Army's legendary 82nd Airborne Division. In 2007, Jose deployed to Afghanistan where he experienced fierce combat with the Taliban. In one life-changing engagement, Jose's scout platoon of 14 paratroopers was overrun by more than 200 Taliban insurgents, leaving him so severely injured he barely escaped with his life.
