Loyalties are tested in this slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romantasy following an assassin and a healer forced to work together to cure a fatal disease, all while resisting the urge to kill each other--or, worse, fall in love. An assassin with the grayest of morals needs the help of a talented healer in fan fiction phenomenon Brigitte Knightley’s trade publishing debut, The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy. Fans of enemies to lovers or forced proximity will be delighted by this dark, delicious fantasy romance.
Osric Mordaunt is a member of the Fyren, assassins who prefer to keep to the shadows. When he’s diagnosed with seith rot, a degenerative disorder that will eat away at his magic and eventually his mind, Osric knows that the Fyren will soon dispose of him. Determined to find a cure, his only hope comes in the form of uptight and scholarly Aurienne Fairhrim. Unfortunately for Osirc, Aurienne is a member of the Haelan order and has nothing but contempt for Fyren.
While Osric was hopeful that his charm would convince the staid Aurienne to help, bribery turns out to be the winning route. He agrees to make an anonymous and very hefty donation to the Haelans, who are combating a debilitating pandemic that only seems to affect children.
The romance is a tantalizing slow burn buzzing with sexual tension, as Aurienne and Osric engage in discreet meetings to assess his diagnosis, look for a cure and possibly reckon with his untimely demise. Considering that this is a duology, readers should prepare themselves accordingly! Even the slightest moves toward Aurienne and Osric acknowledging their attraction feel worth celebrating.
Knightley’s world building slowly takes shape, introducing the various magical orders as they appear. There’s plenty to fascinate outside of Osric and Aurienne’s romance, and one hopes Knightley continues to explore her alternate England in whatever other romances she may have up her sleeve.
There are some truly bleak moments; however, the dark material is rounded out by shining scenes of levity and ridiculous humor. Poignantly, even though the horrors persist, so do Osric and Aurienne, throwing in a few dirty jokes about bodily functions for good measure.
The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy sets a very high bar for fantasy romance debuts. The stakes are high and often deadly, but its charm lies in how it never seems to take itself too seriously. It’s pure fun, punctuated by wry humor and scorching chemistry—a truly lethal combination.
