An MFA program can give a writer the perfect opportunity to read, learn and develop their craft. At least, that’s the idea. Mona Awad’s 2019 novel Bunny reveled in the not-so-nurturing aspects of MFAs: the pressure to be innovative and interesting, the too-tight deadlines and the penchant of writers to form cliques (if you were in an MFA program and think to yourself, “There were no cliques in my MFA!” you were probably running with the in crowd). Awad combined these elements with a liberal serving of horror and dark academia, producing a thrilling and creepy novel about Samantha, a self-styled outsider who uncovers the violent truth behind a cultish squad of her fellow fiction writers, the Bunnies. In this highly anticipated sequel, We Love You, Bunny, the Bunnies get to tell the story from their perspective. If readers thought Bunny was fun, there’s a whole feast of delights and frights waiting for them in this follow-up. The book begins with Samantha returning to her alma mater, Warren, a fictional Ivy League with a prestigious MFA. It’s a triumphant stop on the book tour for her bestselling debut novel, a fictionalization of her dreadful time with the Bunnies at Warren. The Bunnies are quite rightly pissed at Sam’s success—it’s not just jealousy, it’s about justice for the way they were depicted! To get their revenge, they kidnap Sam at her book event and take her hostage. Told by the Bunnies to their kidnapped audience of one, We Love You, Bunny has a terrifying and hilarious voice, one that makes readers feel they’re tied up with Sam. The voices of the Bunnies reveal how wrong Sam got them, and how though they became a homogeneous unit, these women started out as four distinctly twisted parts, each with her own baggage. Awad’s specialties, like family dysfunction and smatterings of pop culture, make this read as enjoyable as any of her other works. While Awad says that We Love You, Bunny can stand on its own, understanding the references from Bunny gives it a feeling of completion, like going to a high school reunion hungry to settle a score. Reliving the events from Bunny in the voices of the Bunnies themselves grants the story a new depth but also a disorienting fragmentation. It’s up to readers to decide whose version they want to believe.
