This novel diverges from the typical chronological framework of beginnings and endings. Syrian writer and academic Tarek Shamma takes the reader into the mazes of writing and its open possibilities. The protagonist, Adel, embarks on writing as an escape from loss, yet this arduous process does not lead to numerous drafts, through which he attempts to rid himself of the deafening silence that overshadowed his life. When he bid farewell to Wadad, it was as if he tried to reinvent her anew within these pages. Loss is filled only with words, or perhaps they temporarily dissipate it. Does the author control the course of events and the lives of his characters? Or does the plot take over his ability to control them, so they head in all directions but those he had previously chosen or assumed? We follow chapters of a story from which stories emerge and intertwine, as if it were a continuous exercise in writing. Between Adel and Leila Salem, there's more than a writer's relationship with a rebellious character. And more than a relationship of scenes with an actress, or a doctor with his patient.
