Al-Rasi was not content with the role of a writer in the classical sense but went beyond it to play the role of historian and sociologist who contributed to preserving an oral heritage always threatened with extinction. Tales and anecdotes, stories and news, advice and sayings, proverbs and wisdom - Salam al-Rasi spent several years harvesting them from the tongues of people, some of whom died and others aged, and events and conversations faded in their memories.
