During the Russian campaign of 1812, as the Napoleonic troops fight a battle they are about to lose, a battalion of former Spanish prisoners, forcibly enrolled in the French army, tries to join the Russians. Misinterpreting their intentions, the Emperor takes it for an act of heroism and orders a cavalry charge to their aid, with unforeseeable consequences. This short story was published in El Pa s in August 1993, while Arturo P rez-Reverte was reporting from Bosnia.
