In nineteenth-century China, in one of the provinces of Hunan, a girl named Lily at the tender age of seven is bound in an emotional connection with a companion of the same age that lasts a lifetime. The companion, named Snow Flower, introduces herself to Lily by sending her a silk fan on which she wrote a poem in Nu Shu--a unique language invented by Chinese women to communicate secretly with each other away from male domination. Over the years, Lily and Snow Flower send each other messages on the fan and compose stories on handkerchiefs, emerging from their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and achievements. Together they endure the suffering of foot binding, contemplate their arranged marriages, and share the loneliness, joys, and tragedies of motherhood. They find solace as they develop a connection that revives their souls.
