British critic and professor of English literature, Dr. Ruth Whittaker, affirms in her important book Doris Lessing that Lessing has expanded the horizons of the English novel, in both form and content, through her novel Memoirs of a Survivor. This novel is considered a continuous exploration of the nature of transformations and their mechanisms, employing realism, imagination, and symbolism. The author used a calm style through her narrator protagonist; we see her describing the events and crises that befell a city that was gradually disappearing over time, losing its identity in a terrifying manner. Furthermore, for the first time, the author blends realism and symbolism in this novel. Lessing conveys this blend with ease and fluidity; the transition from the real world to the symbolic world. The whole matter appears as though the author has become accustomed to moving between the external and internal worlds of her life with ease. The novel takes place in a city where all services have stopped, chaos has spread, and goods have become scarce. The narrator lives in an apartment and contemplates leaving the city that has been overtaken by violent events and chaos.
