In your novel (Amna's Weddings): You chose a difficult subject--death and martyrdom--a subject that tempts wailing, crying, mourning, and melodrama, but you skillfully avoided all that, internalizing the Palestinian condition between the poles of joy and sorrow, wedding and funeral, dialoguing deeply and intelligently with death to illuminate a new aspect of Palestinian experience. Your novel proceeds smoothly and capably, and assigning heroism and narration to women gave the novel elegance and splendor: Rand, Lamis, Amna, the grandmother, and (the two angels) are unforgettable characters. Similarly in (Under the Morning Sun), you succeeded in portraying this ambiguous period's crisis and in depicting the Doctor's character--a convincingly drawn flaw, for the two children Nimr and Noaman cannot be forgotten, nor can Um Al-Walid, Noura, Naeem, Yassin, Salim, and the Doctor be forgotten. Likewise Warda--a charming and fertile female character.
