Overview
This Special Issue provides recent insights into state-of-the-art research on adhesion and friction in biological systems and their bioinspired applications. It highlights the breadth of work across taxa and disciplines, emphasizing both fundamental mechanisms and their translation into engineered systems. By integrating perspectives from biology, physics, and engineering, it deepens our understanding of structure-property relationships and fosters innovation in biomimetic applications. The Special Issue covers a diverse collection of studies dealing with topics on adhesion and friction from cell adhesion phenomena via non-specific adhesion to the mechanical interlocking of structures. We greatly appreciate the diversity of contributions and thank all of our colleagues who kindly accepted our invitation, making this collection possible. Their commitment allowed us to assemble this collection of articles addressing biomimetic questions on adhesion and friction from multiple scientific viewpoints.
