Synopsis:
The story of the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress who encounter the Japanese after their attack on Pearl Harbor is tailor-made for director Howard Hawks, a master of men-under-pressure adventures. Featuring stirring aerial battle scenes and realistic dialogue, this film is far above the average World War II propaganda vehicle; it earned four Academy Award nominations, and won for Best Editing.

Notes:
Theatrical release: March 20, 1943. President Franklin Roosevelt's actual radio address on the Pearl Harbor attack is heard in the film. Director Hawks's friend William Faulkner was hired to work on the script, and wrote the pilot's deathbed scene in one night. Actor John Garfield was the only big star in the cast, but apparently came into the project without star attitude, accepting his role as a small part of a larger ensemble. The film is referenced in Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION as part of a story told by Christopher Walken.
